Shūhei Hisagi

is a character in the anime and manga series Bleach. He is the lieutenant of the 9th Division in the Gotei 13, formerly under captain Kaname Tōsen. He is voiced by seiyu Katsuyuki Konishi.
Character outline
Shūhei is an extremely mature and calm individual, a state of affairs that is slightly at odds with his somewhat punk-like appearance. He is used to taking responsibility, and tends to avoid violence when possible. He seems to be virtuous like his captain's image until the latter was revealed to be a traitor.
Shūhei has several tattoos - a number 69 on his face, as well as lines on the arms and neck. He is also seen with a bandage across his face and has three lines running vertically down the right side of his face, scars that resulted from an injury when several Huge Hollows attacked a group of students (who included Momo Hinamori, Izuru Kira, and Renji Abarai) he was leading into the living world for a lesson in fighting dummy hollows.
His haircut resembles those of Kaien Shiba and Ichigo Kurosaki.
History
Shūhei's past is not explored in-depth, although it is known that he was an extremely talented student in the shinigami academy. His talent allowed him to become a seated officer in Gotei 13 without having to pass additional tests.
When he was at the 6th (final) year at the academy, he was the upperclassman (senpai) of Izuru Kira, Momo Hinamori and Renji Abarai.
During the ryoka invasion, Hisagi engaged in a battle with the 11th division 5th seat, Yumichika Ayasegawa. Despite Hisagi's higher rank, he was defeated when Yumichika used the true form of his Shikai, draining Hisagi's spiritual power away.
After learning that Tōsen has been conspiring with Sōsuke Aizen, Hisagi and Tōsen's friend, Captain Sajin Komamura of the 7th Division, visit the grave of a friend of Tōsen's. Here, they both agree they must open Tōsen's eyes to Aizen's true nature.
This being said, Hisagi appears to have come to terms with his captain's betrayal. Immediately after, he is seen trying to help an intoxicated Izuru Kira, who is drinking away his troubles with Rangiku Matsumoto.
In the meantime, Hisagi has taken on the burden of his captain's work. Despite his rank as the division's lieutenant, Tōsen had previously done most of the work for the division and Hisagi is a little overwhelmed with the amount of work he needs to do now.
Trivia
- Hisagi is called Isai by Izuru at one time, though it is not explored in-depth whether this is just something Izuru calls him or is an actual nickname of his. But it was actually because the foot massage they were receiving from the 4th Division was painful, so he said "Hisagi" through gritted teeth.
- In omake chapters Hisagi, Renji, and Kira usually spend time together.
