Until 1984, when the regions were reshaped, it was part of the larger Benadir region and its capital was Mogadishu, but is now Marka. It is bordered by the Somali regions of Banaadir, Middle Shabele, Hiiraan, Bay and Middle Juba and the Indian Ocean. After Mogadishu, this is thought to be the region with the most population in Somalia. Southern Digil clans make up most of the population. There are also large minority of hawiye to be found in the region

Digil clans:Since the fall of the somali goverment the lower shabelle is under occupation by a subclan of habar gidir and it is under the control of the warlord yusuf inda ade.
The real owners of the lower shabelle the digil have nothing to say. many of theire property and farms are robed by the malitia of yusef inde adde. The digil people must pay unlowefull taxes, who refuses to pay tax will be killed by yusuf inde adde malitia.
Yusuf inde adde is responsible for the killing of thousends of digil people who lives in lower shabelle including women and childeren.
Yusuf inde adde whant to opres and kill the digil people so that his clan the hawiye can claim the lower shabelle.
