Sheppard West (TTC)
Encyclopedia : S : SH : SHE : Sheppard West (TTC)
Sheppard West is a proposed station of the Yonge-University Spadina line of the subway in Toronto, Canada, to be built on its western branch, the Spadina line. If built, it would be located on Sheppard Avenue West at Bakersfield Street, and may open in approximately 2013 or 2014.
Nearby landmarks include Downsview Park, which was the site of the World Youth Day Papal Visit in 2002, and the 'SARSstock' concert in 2003. It was formerly the site of an airstrip used as a military base (CFB Downsview), and by an airline manuacturer (DeHavilland). Other points of interest include the Chesswood hockey arenas, and the industrial lands north of Sheppard.
The station would be built underground and parallel to Sheppard Avenue. The line would continue from Downsview station along W.R. Allen Road but then curve westward to align with Sheppard's northward alignment, at the CN/GO tracks.
Part of the station proposal is that a new station will also be built on GO Transit's Bradford line, to interchange with the subway station.
Subway extension
The Toronto Transit Commission has conducted the environmental assessment (see official link below) for the project to extend the Spadina line north from Downsview through this station to York University, Steeles Avenue and Vaughan Corporate Centre. The Government of Ontario pledged $670 million of funding for its construction in its March 23, 2006 budget. The City of Toronto and the TTC have indicated their concerns about lacking funding to operate the subway once it is built.External links
