Sheriffdom
Encyclopedia : S : SH : SHE : Sheriffdom
A sherrifdom is a judicial district in Scotland. There are currently 6 sherrifdoms - those of Glasgow and Strathkelvin, Grampian, Highland and Islands, Lothian and Borders, North Strathclyde, South Strathclyde, Dumfries and Galloway and Tayside, Central and Fife. Each sherrifdom has a Sheriff Principal.
Sherrifdoms were the origin of the counties of Scotland.
In the 19th century, the sherrifdoms were grouped, and the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica reports that there were only 15 sheriffs of Scotland. [link]
