Sherman Brothers
Encyclopedia : S : SH : SHE : Sherman Brothers
The Sherman Brothers are Academy Award-winning American songwriters who specialize in musical film. They are Robert B. Sherman (born December 19, 1925) and Richard M. Sherman (born June 12, 1928).
In the 1960s, the brothers worked primarily with The Walt Disney Company on music for theme park rides, television specials, and films, beginning with The Parent Trap. They stopped working exclusively for Disney after Walt Disney's death in 1966 and began to produce independent scores, though they returned to write six original songs for the film The Tigger Movie which yielded three "top ten" awards in video sales. They topped the US charts in 1961 with "Let's Get Together", and the song "You're Sixteen" twice made it to the Number 1 spot in the United States. They have also done a large amount of musical work for Disney theme parks, most notably the theme songs for "it's a small world" and the Carousel of Progress.
In recent years, with Robert's move to London, England, the brothers have written many new songs for the stage musical presentations of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Mary Poppins, produced collaboratively by Disney and Cameron Mackintosh. Chitty is the longest running show ever to play the London Palladium, and opened on Broadway April 28, 2005.
For their contributions to the motion picture industry, the Sherman brothers have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6918 Hollywood Blvd and were inducted into the Songwriters' Hall of Fame on June 9, 2005.
