Shimmer (also known as Selinda Flinders) is a fictional villain from DC Comics, created by George Perez and Marv Wolfman. She first appeared in New Teen Titans #3 (January 1981) as one of the founding members of the Fearsome Five, and became enemy of the Teen Titans, Superman, and the Outsiders. She has a brother named Baran (aka Mammoth), also a founding member of the Fearsome Five. Clad in a revealing Goth-like black leather outfit, she has the superhuman ability to transmute any element or compound into any other.

History

Selinda and Baran Flinders grew up in Australia. Both of them possessed superhuman powers that set them apart from their schoolmates, who teased them mercilessly for being different. When the frustrated siblings used their powers against the local children, enraged and fearful adults tried to drive Selinda and Baran's entire family out of town. As a compromise, the children's father brought his two children to the renowned Markovian scientist Dr. Helga Jace. Jace helped the siblings understand and expand their powers, while trying to instill a sense of morality in the two teenagers.

Nevertheless, Selinda and Baran turned to crime and established criminal records as Shimmer and Mammoth, eventually answering an ad in the Underworld Star, a criminal underground paper, by the supervillain Doctor Light, and joining his new criminal group, the Fearsome Five. Their first scheme brought them into conflict with the Teen Titans, who defeated and imprisoned them, a fate that would befall them again and again.

Selinda and Baran eventually found peace in a Tibetan monastery, where they renounced their life of crime. Their discovery of peace was soon shattered by the return of their teammate, Psimon. Psimon sought for revenge against all those who wronged him, including his former teammates. Psimon savagely attacked the siblings by driving a spear through Mammoth’s head and then transformed Shimmer into glass and shattered her, apparently killing her. Mammoth survived the attack, and held out hope that Shimmer could still be "found." [link]

Sometime later, in Outsiders #12 -15 (July-October 2004), Dr. Sivana, an archenemy of Captain Marvel, reorganized the Fearsome Five by summoning Psimon, freeing Jinx, Gizmo, and Mammoth from a metahuman prison on Alcatraz Island, and by using his advanced technology to reconstitute Shimmer’s shattered remains, bringing her back to life. She immediately returned to her criminal ways with Mammoth, and with the rest of the Five, aided Sivana in his scheme to short sell Lexcorp stock by stealing accounts from its corporate executives and then destroying several crucial Lexcorp properties. The Five urged Sivana to allow them to attack a Lexcorp nuclear missile facility near Joshua Tree, California. When Sivana refused, they stated they intended to do so with or without his permission, and Sivana responded by killing Gizmo for their treachery, and severing relations with them. The survivors undertook the plan on their own, and attempted to fire a missile at Canada, but they were thwarted by the Outsiders.

Mammoth was captured and returned to prison, but Shimmer is currently at large.
