Shoto Tanemura (born Tsunehisa Tanemura on August 28 1947 in Matsubushi, Saitama Prefecture) is the incumbent headmaster of the Genbukan Ninpo Bugei school of martial arts. He has been trained in martial arts since the age of nine and is currently the Grandmaster of numerous martial arts traditions. Notably, he is also a descendant of an ancient Japanese noble family.
Studying since childhood under his father, uncle and many famous masters like Fukumoto sensei, Akimoto sensei, Kobayashi Masao Sensei, Kimura Masaji Sensei, Dr. Sato Kinbei, Takamatsu Toshitsugu Sensei, Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi and others, he decided to embark upon his mission to preserve and promote the true spirit of budo and through the Genbukan organization. After the advent of the Genbukan, Grandmaster Tanemura continued to train under many of Takamatsu Toshitsugu sensei's high level students such as Dr. Sato Kinbei and Kimura Masaji Sensei continuing to add to his own and in turn the Genbukan's wealth of knowledge and expertise in Ninpo Bugei and Koryu Ju-Jutsu. It was through these deep relationships with Takamatsu Toshitsugu's high level students that he was able to receive Menkyo Kaiden or complete mastership of a school in Hon Tai Takagi Yoshin ryu, Hon Tai Kukishin ryu, Gikan ryu and others.
He is a retired police officer and taught martial arts at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Academy.
Grandmaster Tanemura is the head of the Genbukan Organization which offers training in the art of Ninpo in a traditional manner, as well as the Kokusai Jujutsu Renmei, which teaches jujutsu in the traditional manner as well.
He was once part of the Bujinkan organization headed by Masaaki Hatsumi, but left in 1984 to form his own dojo. After the advent of the Genbukan, Grandmaster Tanemura continued to train under many of Takamatsu Toshitsugu Sensei's high level students such as Dr. Sato Kinbei Sensei, Kobayashi Masao Sensei and Kimura Masaji Sensei continuing to add to his own and in turn the Genbukan's wealth of knowledge and expertise in Ninpo Bugei and Koryu Ju-Jutsu. His training also includes Chinese internal arts, traditional swordsmanship, and he recently began a system of koryu karate, fulfilling the vision of Takamatsu Toshitsugu Sensei to make public a system of self defence based on the highest teachings of Kijin Chosui Ryu, also described within the Amatsu Tatara Tora no Maki.
