Shut Your Mouth (Garbage song)

Encyclopedia : S : SH : SHU : Shut Your Mouth (Garbage song)

"Shut Your Mouth" was the fourth and final single from beautifulgarbage, the third album by Garbage, released in Europe and Australia throughout 2002.

Song profile

"Shut Your Mouth" was written and recorded at Smart Studios during the 2000 sessions for beautifulgarbage. "Shut Your Mouth" was one of the first songs Garbage worked on during these sessions.

The song's running time is 3:28 and is a mid-tempo guitar led number over a hip-hop drum beat which kicks in with a confident stride while Shirley whisper raps the verses before the scathing chorus hits us hard.

Single release

"Shut Your Mouth" was released as the final single from beautifulgarbage in Europe in July 2002, and in the UK and Australia in September 2002.

In the UK it was issued in a super limited three part CD set and charted at number 20, making it the most successful UK single from the album. In other territories it was released as an EP with generic packaging.

"Shut Your Mouth" became the first single in UK Chart history to enter the Top 20 and then not appear anywhere in the Top 75 the following week. This is due to the fact that the 15,000 copy limited edition single was deleted on the day of release.

B-sides

On it's European and Australian release the single was backed with the Garbage B-side "Happiness Pt.2" and live versions of "Only Happy When It Rains" and their Rolling Stones cover "Wild Horses".

For the UK release the single had three new and as of 2005, still all exclusive to the single release - "Sex Never Goes Out of Fashion", "April Tenth" and "I'm Really Into Techno".

Music video

Two videos were shot for "Shut Your Mouth". The first, an animated video set on a TV show and featuring Shirley driving (again!), was directed by Henry Moore Selder and was broadcast in Europe. This video was aired in Europe and included on the UK CD1.

It was re-edited after being first shown, because apparently the guiatrist, Steve Marker, looked too fat in the first version.

The second was a live video, which incorporated extra random footage. It was directed by Elliot Chaffer and recorded at the band's London show on 8th April 2002, at the London Ocean and at their later Milwaukee gig on 11 May 2002, at the Eagle's Ballroom. This video was aired in the UK and Australia and was included on the UK CD2.

Remixes

"Shut Your Mouth" remixes were completed for the band by Italian duo Jolly Music, UK house DJ Ken Reay and by UK producer/remixer Jagz Kooner.

There is also a radio version of the song, with the swearing edited out.

At one performance of the song in Japan, in February 2002, the band ad-libbed a guitar riff from AC/DC's "Back in Black" into the song.

At the August 2005 AmsterJam mash-up event at Randall's Island, NY Garbage 'duetted' with electro-rock artist Peaches with a number of songs. "Shut Your Mouth" was performed as a mash-up with Peaches' own "Shake Your Dix".

Shut Your Mouth quote, unquote

Shirley Manson: "In a general sense, it's about keeping your own counsel. There are so many opinions out there and misinformation and everybody's got their own agenda. Take a split second to think before you leap. Which, of course, I never do. Ha ha!"
