The 1573 siege of Odani castle was the last stand of the Asai clan, one of Oda Nobunaga's chief opponents.

Nobunaga took Odani Castle from Asai Nagamasa, who, left with no other option, entrusted the remainder of his family to Nobunaga and then committed suicide. Nagamasa's three daughters survived the siege, and two would later marry into powerful families. Their escape from the besieged castle became a fairly common sentimental scene in traditional Japanese art.
