Signal (subscription service)
Encyclopedia : S : SI : SIG : Signal (subscription service)
Signal was a subscription-based service founded by Data Broadcasting Corporation (DBC) that provided real-time stock quotes to the subscriber to their computer.
It was originally distributed via the subcarrier of an FM radio station as data to a special receiver connected to a computer. Signal's data was also alternately distributed via the VBI of the video of several popular cable & satellite tv channels, such as C-SPAN and WGN, which was received by a special receiver connected to a computer as well that read the data in the VBI.
Signal was discontinued by DBC for eSignal, essentially the same service, but distributed via the Internet instead.
