Encyclopedia : S : SI : SIG : Signy Research Station
The Signy Research Station is located on Signy island at coordinates 60°43' S, 45°36' W. Built in 1947 as a meteorological station, it was the second research base on the South Orkney Islands islands (after the Argentine Orcadas Base in 1903). In 1963 it was turned into a laboratory for biological research.
The station currently functions from November to April (South hemisphere summer) and has four buildings with capacity for up to 10 people. There's a camera to record the ice changes all year around with a record of 50 years of ice activity since activated.
