Silver Falcons

Encyclopedia : S : SI : SIL : Silver Falcons

The Silver Falcons are the aerobatic demonstration team of the South African Air Force. Originally formed in 1946 as the Bumbling Bees and flying first the T-6 Harvard and then the de Havilland Vampire, by 1966 the team had changed to the Aermacchi MB-326 "Impala" and changed its name to The Silver Falcons.

Until 1998 the team formed a part of 85 Combat Flying School and its predecessors, but from that date the team moved to become a part of the Central Flying School at AFB Langebaanweg near Cape Town. During this move, the team changed from the Impala to the PC-7 MkII "Astra" turboprop trainer.

The team's 5 aircraft retain the white and red paint scheme of all of the SAAF's PC-7s, with the exception of large team numbers painted on the vertical stabilisers. All the team's pilots are serving instructors with the Central Flying School, and therefore practice the Silver Falcons displays in their spare time.
