Simon Gagné (February 29, 1980 in Sainte-Foy, Quebec, Canada) is a Canadian hockey player with the Philadelphia Flyers and, during the 2006 Olympics, Team Canada. He is, as of April 12, 2006, an alternate captain for the Philadelphia Flyers.
Playing career
Gagné was 16 when he broke into the QMJHL (Quebec Major Junior Hockey League) as a member of the Beauport Harfangs during the 1996–97 season. After spending the year learning and maturing while playing on the third and fourth lines, Gagné finished with 31 points (9 goals and 22 assists) in 51 games. That following off-season. In two full seasons with the Quebec Remparts, Gagné totaled 189 points, 80 goals and 109 assists, in only 114 games. That included a 120 point season in 1998-99 in which he tallied 50 goals and 70 assists, along with 42 minutes in penalties. Gagné was also Mr. Clutch during his playoff career for the Remparts, recording 20 goals and 13 assists for 33 points in 25 career playoff matches. However, the Remparts failed to win a QMJHL Championship or a Memorial Cup Championship during the two years that Gagné was a member of the organization. After the 1998-99 season, Gagné graduated to the pro ranks. He learned all that he could from junior hockey. He was ready to take his game to the next level. To show their appreciation for him and what he did for the franchise during his career, the Remparts retired Gagné's #12 jersey during a ceremony early on in the 1999–2000 season. Gagné joined NHL hall-of-famer Guy Lafleur as the only two players that have had their jersey's retired by the Quebec Remparts. The left winger, who began his hockey career with the Beauport Harfangs of the QMJHL, was the 22nd overall pick by the Flyers at the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. He has since developed into one of the league's 20 top two-way forwards, best known for his speed, agility, and creativity with the puck, as well as commitment to defense in his own zone.
Gagné is noted for his speed, agility, and lateral movement.
On January 5, 2006, Gagné scored one of the fastest goals in NHL overtime history, taking just 7 seconds to score on New York Rangers goalie Kevin Weekes.
Gagne has been a member of Team Canada and won an Olympic gold medal at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, as well as representing his country at the World Junior, World Cup, and World Championship levels. Also, he was selected to play for Team Canada at the 2006 Olympics.
