Sinoe County

Sinoe County encompasses an originally autonomous freed-slave colony known as Mississippi in Africa, which was founded prior to Liberia's declaration of independence from the American Colonization Society. Mississippi in Africa was settled by freed slaves from the eponymous American state under the supervision of a subchapter of the ACS known as the Mississippi Colonization Society and was eventually absorbed into the Republic of Liberia. Its capital, Greenville, was named for the Green family of Jefferson County, Miss., who freed their slaves to emigrate. The largest group of immigrants to the Mississippi colony came from Prospect Hill Plantation, also in Jefferson County, in the 1840s, and included more than 300 slaves from that plantation, which was owned by American Revolutionary War veteran Isaac Ross, and from other area plantations owned by members of Ross's family. Later a related community was located upriver from Mississippi in Africa, which was known as Louisiana, and was settled by slaves from that American state.
