Sioux Gateway Airport , also known as Colonel Bud Day Field, serves the Sioux City, Iowa area. It is 6 miles (10 km) south of Sioux City and just west of Sergeant Bluff.
In addition to commercial and general aviation service, the airport is home to the 185th Fighter Wing and 185th Refueling Wing of the Iowa Air National Guard.
United Airlines Flight 232
See main article: United Airlines Flight 232On July 19, 1989, a DC-10-10 of United Airlines, on a flight from Denver to Chicago crashed at Sioux Gateway Airport while attempting an emergency landing. 110 passengers and 1 crew member were killed, while 175 passengers and 10 crew members survived. The accident was one of the most famous aviation disasters in American history, due to the skill of the crew in saving most of the occupants, and because the crash and rescue operation were captured on videotape by a news crew.
