Skalvians

Encyclopedia : S : SK : SKA : Skalvians

Skalvians, Scalvians or Scalowians (German: ) were an extinct tribe of Prussians which according to the Chronicon terrae Prussiae of Peter of Dusburg, inhabited the land of Scalovia (Scalwia, Schalowia, German: ) to the south of the Curonians, by the lower Nemunas river, in the times around 1240.

The origin of the name is disputed. The centre of Skalvia is supposed to be Ragnit (Raganita).

Their traces come from burial grounds with cremated remains and occasional graves of horses. Judging from the diggings, Skalvians are assumed to be relative with Curonians and to be assimilated into Latvians and Lithuanians.
