Skippy is one of the first films nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, in 1931. It was written by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, Don Marquis, Norman Z. McLeod and Sam Mintz from the comic strip by Percy Crosby, and directed by Norman Taurog. The film was based upon the comic strip Skippy by Percy Crosby.

The movie starred Jackie Cooper, Robert Coogan, Mitzi Green and Jackie Searl. Taurog won the Academy Award for Directing. The film also did well enough to inspire a sequel called Sooky, which is the name of the character Robert Coogan played. Despite its success Percy Crosby reportedly hated the film.

The story involved Skippy's efforts to help his new friend Sooky. Sooky is played by Jackie Cooper's brother Robert. In the story Sooky lives in a shantytown.
