Slovak Zion Synod
Encyclopedia : S : SL : SLO : Slovak Zion Synod
The Slovak Zion Synod is one of the 65 regional bodies that make up the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. It is the only non-geographic synod in the ELCA, and the only synod based on ethnicity. The synod was founded by Slovakian immigrants in 1919 and joined with the United Lutheran Church in America as long as it could remain a separate synod in that denomination. The policy continued when the ULCA merged into the Lutheran Church in America and later the ELCA.
Currently, the synod has 27 congregations located from Connecticut to Illinois and one congregation in Ontario, Canada.
The Rev. Wilma S. Kucharek is currently bishop of the Slovak Zion Synod. She succeeded the Rev. Juan Čobrda, who had served as bishop of the synod since 1993.
