Smudge pot

Encyclopedia : S : SM : SMU : Smudge pot

-->
A smudge pot is an oil-burning device used to prevent frost on fruit trees. Usually a smudge pot has a large round base with a chimney coming out of the middle of the base. The smudge pot is placed under a tree allowing the heat and smoke from the burning oil to prevent the accumulation of frost on the fruit of the tree.

During the early 1900s, smudge pots were commonly used in areas such as California's numerous citrus groves. The smudge pot often became a symbolic prize in local football rivalries. Today rivals Bonita High School and San Dimas High School, in Southern California, compete for a silver plated smudge pot, and Redlands High School and Redlands East Valley High School compete for a half blue, half red pot to symbolize both schools in Redlands, California.
