Sniper (band)
Encyclopedia : S : SN : SNI : Sniper (band)
Sniper is a French hip hop band composed of four sons of immigrants from the suburbs of Paris: El Tunisiano and Aketo from Deuil-la-Barre, Black Renega from Montfermeil, and DJ Boudj from Saint-Denis. The band was formed in 1997 under the name Personnalité Suspecte, but changed its name later, and released its first album, Du rire aux larmes, in 2001. Their second album, Gravé dans la roche, was released in 2003.
Many of the group's songs handle very political themes, such as the Israeli occupation of Palestine in Jeteur de pierres and a perceived injustice in the French political system in La France. This, combined with the group's at times vulgar way of expressing this, incited the French Minister of the Interior Nicolas Sarkozy to attack the group in November 2003 for the lyrics which he considered 'violent, racist and abusive'.
