Snowspeeder

The Incom T-47 Snowspeeder is a 2 person vehicle from the Star Wars universe. It is featured most prominently in the motion picture , where a group of Rebel Alliance fighter pilots attempt to defend Echo Base on the ice planet of Hoth from invading Imperial forces.
The Snowspeeder itself is a modified civilian airspeeder. Extensive remodeling was needed to convert an unarmed passenger vehicle into a type of airspeeder that could function for extended periods in the extremely low atmospheric temperature of Hoth.
The craft is armed with dual laser cannons and equiped with a tow cable. The tow cable was used to great effect by the Rebel forces to tie up the massive AT-AT ground vehicles, causing them to crash to the ground, completely immobile and defenseless. Like the original-model Y-wing, the Snowspeeder can be operated by two crewmen: one pilot, and one gunner.
A toy Snowspeeder was released in 1980 as part of the original Kenner series of Star Wars toys and action figures. An electronic redesign was released in 1995 in the later Kenner toy line, "Star Wars: The Power of the Force," that was issued in anticipation of the theatrical re-release of the original Star Wars trilogy. Micro Machines and LEGO versions were also sold.
Parts for the conversion of the civilian airspeeders came from a variety of sources, but primarily from the aging Y-wing fighters. Cockpit modules, control surfaces and armor plate were taken from the starfighter, similarities allowing for time savings in re-training pilots.
New powerplants and repulsorlift engines were required because of increased weight of weapons and armor. Snowspeeders have a flight ceiling of 175 kilometers, a top speed of 1,000 kilometers per hour and a combat speed of 600 kilometers per hour.
