The party is a successor of the Communist party of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and was enlarged by the inclusion of the Socijaldemokrati BiH party to the original SDP.
The current president of the party is Zlatko Lagumdžija, former Bosnian foreign minister.
At the last legislative elections, 5 october 2002, the party won 10.4 % of the popular vote and 4 out of 42 seats in the House of Representatives of Bosnia and Herzegovina and 15 out of 140 seats in the House of Representatives of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It won also 3 out of 83 in the National Assembly of the Republic of Srpska
