Soldier's heart was a term during the U.S. Civil War era that described the mental / emotional changes of combatants resulting from the war's horrific conditions and violence. The term preceded "battle fatigue," "shell shock," "combat stress reaction" and "post traumatic stress disorder"
It is also the title of one of Gary Paulsen's books.
