Solomon Islands campaign
Encyclopedia : S : SO : SOL : Solomon Islands campaign
campaign of World War II. In 1942-43 the campaign — especially the pivotal Battle of Guadalcanal — was the major task of the Allied Pacific Ocean Areas command, under Admiral Chester Nimitz. The campaign began when the Japanese captured the strategic base of Rabaul in January 1942. Following Guadalcanal, the Allies secured vital territory and bases for operations that took them to the Japanese home islands. However, Japanese resistance in the northern Solomons continued until the very last days of the war.
