Somanya alphabet
Encyclopedia : S : SO : SOM : Somanya alphabet
The Osmanya alphabet is a script for the Somali language invented between 1920 and 1922 by the Sultan of Obbia's brother, Cismaan Yuusuf Keenadiid.
In 1961 it was made official in Somalia, along with the Latin alphabet. However, since 1972, only the Latin alphabet has been official, and use of Osmanya has dwindled. It is one of the few alphabets around the world with letters that were not based on an existing script.
