Someş

Encyclopedia : S : SO : SOM : Someş

The river Someş in Romanian or Szamos in Hungarian, flows through Romania and Hungary.

There are two headstreams, Someşul Mare (Big Someş), rising from the Rodna Mountains in the Bistriţa-Năsăud County and Someşul Mic (Little Someş), rising from the Apuseni Mountains in the Cluj County, which is in turn formed by the confluence of another two rivers: Someşul Cald (Warm Someş) and Someşul Rece (Cold Someş).

The two streams meet at Dej, from where the Someş flows westward, through Satu Mare, to join the Tisza in Hungary, near Vásárosnamény.

The river Someş was known in antiquity by the name Samus.
