Son, Norway

Encyclopedia : S : SO : SON : Son, Norway

Son (which is pronounced more like "Soon") is a village in Norway, located at the Oslofjord and right north of Moss. Administratively, it belongs to Vestby municipality in Akershus. It is nevertheless located right north of the border to Østfold. North of the village is the place Hølen.

During the Renaissance, the place became famous as a harbour. Timber came from the immediate nearby, partially it was floated down the river. On many Dutch maps from that time, Oslofjord is noted as Zoon Water, the oldest one being from 1582. When this period ended, the place lost its importance.

From the beginning of the 1900s the place became known for its attraction of famous people such as the poet Herman Wildenvey and painters such as Karl Dørnberger. Even today the place is known as a "town of artists".
