Songs and Dances of Death
Encyclopedia : S : SO : SON : Songs and Dances of Death
The Songs and Dances of Death (Russian: Pesni y plyaski smerti) are four songs by the Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky, written in the mid-1870s. The songs are entitled Lullaby, Serenade, Trepak and The Field Marshal. They set texts by Count Golenishev-Kutuzov.
The songs were originally written for piano and several different voices. They were orchestrated for soprano (he dedicated his version to Galina Vishnevskaya) by Dmitri Shostakovich in the early 1960s, and had a substantial influence on many of the later composer's works from around that time. The Shostakovich orchestration has since been adapted for bass and baritone voices.
