Soo Bahk Do

Encyclopedia : S : SO : SOO : Soo Bahk Do

Soo Bahk Do is a Korean martial art that was founded on November 9, 1945. Since then, this martial art has spread across the globe. Soo Bahk Do translates to "way of the striking hand", or literally "hand strike way." But also, the deeper meaning of "Soo Bahk" comes to "person" and "cultivation," which means to grow as a person in the martial art. The founder of this martial art and philosophy, Kwang Jang Nim Hwang Kee (1914-2002), who also founded the Moo Duk Kwan (school of martial virtue), and studied the ancient martial arts book, the Moo Yei Do Bo Tong Ji. Here he discovered the term "Soo Bahk", thus naming his martial art "Soo Bahk Do."

Originally there were only four different belt levels: White, green, red, and midnight blue. (The equivelant of black.) But in 1975 Grandmaster Hwang Kee added the orange belt as an incentive for white belts. In all, there are 10 gup (beginner) levels, starting at 10th, and going to 1st. after 1st gup, there are Cho (1st) Dans, E (2nd) Dans, and so on, reaching up to 9. 10th to 4th gups test on average every three months, 3rd to 1st about every six months, and Cho Dans 1 year, E Dans 2 years, etc.
