Sophienhöhe

The Sophienhöhe (290 m AMSL) is artificial hill arose by surface mining at an open cast mining. It is located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany close to the cities of Jülich and Düren.
The Rheinbraun AG is mining brown coal at the surface there. The overburden which was taken off the brown coal is dumped at one places where now the Sophienhöhe is. This hill is 200 m higher than the flat region which surrounds him.
The open pit beside the Sophienhöhe is called Tagebau Hambach the lowest surface point in Europe. At the top of the Sophienhöhe you stand 583 m above the lowest point of the open pit, which is 293 below sea level.
