Souf

Souf is a town 35 miles north of Amman, the capital of Jordan. Its population exceeds 25,000 people. It is located over a series of mountains known as the Ajloun Series with a height of over 1,000 metres.
Souf was the center of Jerash governate (known as al-Meradh) for more than a century. Now, Souf is attached to the great city of Jerash.
People of Souf
Soufanian - or Swafneh as they are called in the local language - are very active farmers, well educated, and ambitious people. They inhabited Souf for over twelve generations.
Soufanians, as all other native Jordanians, maintain their tribal roots by using their tribes' names as surnames. They see no contradiction between this and the new modernized social life.

Natives of Souf can be found in Jerash, and a small minority in Amman and Irbid. Some Soufanains emigrated to the Persian Gulf, Europe and the United States.
Agriculture in Souf
Souf is famous for its water springs and small waterfalls. Its water used mainly as drinking water and for irrigating the lands of Souf valley. A wide range of fruits is grown in Souf, including olives, grapes, figs, peaches, pears, plums, apples, apricots, almonds, and cherries.
Beside the irrigated lands in souf valley, there is a wide area of non-irrigated lands scattered over a number of hills and mountains which depend on seasonal rains: Sahlat, Wadi Warran (Abu-Hmaidan Farm), Manarah, Koom, Sabatah, Mraba'ah, and others.
