Encyclopedia : S : SO : SOU : Soup kitchen

A soup kitchen is a place where food is offered to the poor for free or at a reasonably low price. Frequently located in poor neighborhoods, they are often staffed by volunteers such as church groups. Soup kitchens sometimes get their food from a food bank for free or at a low price, because they are considered a charity.

The notorious American gangster Al Capone financed a soup kitchen during the Great Depression, possibly to improve his image.
