Editorial
The South China Morning Post and Sunday Morning Post are Hong Kong’s premier English language newspapers and the Group’s flagship publications. First published in 1903, the newspapers have developed an enviable reputation for authoritative, influential and independent reporting on Hong Kong, China and the rest of Asia. The team of seasoned journalists, based throughout the Greater China region, provide an unmatched resource of local knowledge and experience. Time and again the SCMP is first with breaking news and in-depth penetrating analysis of the issues behind the stories.
Online ventures
Scmp.com is a subscription-based service, which also allows the retrieval of archive articles dating back from 1993. Launched online in December 1996, scmp.com is the leading online provider of news and information on Hong Kong and Greater China. The online content initiative was launched to prepare for the Hong Kong Handover to China. In 1997, the SCMP provided 30 hours of non-stop live coverage via webcast of the handover. Two years later, scmp.com generated its first revenues from display advertising.Online registration and a viable advertising model were introduced in 1999-2000, with investments made in a content management system, demographic targeting for advertisers and improved editorial with breaking news alerts and e-newsletters. This enhancement was followed in 2002 with the Premium View subscription plan, whereby subscribers paid for content and archives for the first time in Asia.
Following an industry-wide restructuring caused by the dot com crash, content became critical to building a sustainable online business. As a result online content licensing was introduced in 2003. That same year, scmp.com changed from Premium View to full access subscription. In 2004 scmp.com delivered content to mobile phones for the first time ever, with SMS alters and a revenue model designed around digital content syndication to mobile operators.
In 2005, scmp.com introduced more multimedia content including podcasts, which allowed subscribers to stream or download MP3 files for an audio version of news stories. Responding to a global trend of increased community involvement and interaction with online news, scmp.com introduced its own brand of citizen journalism. The site “Citizen Post” allowed local and international readers to be more interactive with the South China Morning Post through submission of video clips, mobile pictures, text messages and audio reports culled during the WTO Conference (13-18 Dec 2005).
In 2006, the SCMP will make further investments in the development of its web sites and content management system. The redesign of SCMP web site will enhance user experience and create advertising opportunities. A new online publishing system will dramatically improve the search engine and provide individuals with services such as web page personalisation, e-mail tracking systems and archive optimisation.
In addition, the ongoing need to serve the 3G world with branded content is an area that the SCMP intends to service more in the coming years.
