South Yorkshire Police is the Home Office police force responsible for policing South Yorkshire in England.
The force covers an area of approximately 1,554 square kilometres which is made up of the county's three boroughs, Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham plus the City of Sheffield. The resident population is 1.2 million.
Force headquarters is in Sheffield with the force being divded into 6 basic command units (BCUs), these being Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, Sheffied Central, Sheffield North and Sheffield South.
The Chief Constable is Meredydd Hughes who was appointed in September 2004.
South Yorkshire Police Authority has 9 councillors (drawn from the metropolitan boroughs of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield), 3 justices of the peace, and 5 independent members.
The force was formed in 1974, as a merger of the previous Sheffield and Rotherham Constabulary along with part of the West Yorkshire Constabulary area (to which Barnsley Borough Police and Doncaster Borough Police had been merged into on October 1, 1968).
Proposals made by the Home Secretary on March 21, 2006 would see the force merge with West Yorkshire Police, North Yorkshire Police and Humberside Police to form a strategic police force for the entire region. [link]
