Immigration

Southeast Asian Americans were the second Asian immigrant group to arrive in the United States, arriving at different times. Thai Americans were the first group, starting in 1830. Filipino Americans followed, with arrivals starting on October 18, 1853; they came to work as field laborers. Vietnamese American women first arrived as brides of U.S. service men who were stationed in Vietnam, with greater Vietnamese immigration occurring at the end of the Vietnam war. Cambodian Americans first immigrated to the United States as students sent abroad by their families. After 1975, lager groups of Cambodian Americans arrived as refugees. Hmong Americans also arrived as refuguees after 1975.

The major immigration of Southeaast Asian Americans to the United States began in 1960 and continues to present day.
