Southwell is a small coastal village in Tophill on the Isle of Portland, Dorset, between the town of Easton and Portland Bill.

Pronunciation Controversy

The exact pronunciation of Southwell remains a subject of debate. One view, that used by the BBC and other broadcasters, is that it should be pronounced Suth-ell, while others believe that it should be pronounced South-well. Both pronunciations are acceptable, although as a guideline those from Southwell itself tend to use the 'South-well' pronunciation.
