Space Construction Vehicle (StarCraft)

SCVs are robotic suits which hover above the ground and are propelled by rockets installed on their backs. Vaugely resembling the mecha of Japanese, each arm possesses a fusion torch, which is capable of cutting mineral chunks from formations and welding, allowing it to be used in construction and repair or damaged Terran structures and machines.
In addition to constructing Terran bases, SCVs were also used in the construction of the space platforms orbiting certain Terran planets, especially the reconstruction of the Tarsonis platform.
The SCV is the basic Terran construction unit, used to construct buildings and mine resources from mineral formations and Vespene Refineries. Unlike its Protoss or Zerg counterparts, SCVs can repair damaged Terran structures and Terran mechanical units. The SCV is slightly more robust than both the Protoss Probe and the Zerg Drone (60 HP for the SCV compared to 40 for the Probe and Drone).
For game purposes, SCVs possess aspects of both mechanical and biological units. This means that the Terran Medic's Heal ability and the Science Vessel's Irradiate ability will affect the SCV, while SCVs are also capable of repairing each other. They are also vulnerable to all special abilities that affect biological or mechanical units.
While an SCV constructs a building, it hovers over the construction site. This means that it will occupy an SCV to create a building, but it will not be lost, like a Zerg drone. However, it is less efficient than a Protoss probe; if the SCV is destroyed while the building is under construction, the construction will be stopped, until either another SCV can be dispatched to complete it, the building is destroyed or canceled.
SCVs have the ability to carry special items such as psi-emitters or data disks. Like other workers, SCVs do not trigger Spider Mines.
"You ain't from around here, are you?"
"I can't believe they put me in one of these things!"
"And now I gotta put up with this too?"
"I told em I was claustrophobic, I gotta get outta here!"
"I'm locked in here tighter than a frog's butt in a watermelon seed fight."

Trivia
There is a discussion around the unit's in-game portrait: some claim the SCV pilot is Black. Others suggest the SCV is piloted by a Terran Civilian, who is simply presented in dim light, or who may be tanned through work such as farm labour in times when they are outside of their SCV. A third possibility is that the pilot is simply multiracial. Although seemingly trivial on its own, the discussion is part of a larger debate about fair representation of ethnic groups in StarCraft.Quotes
