Constructed between 1240 and 1250 by the Counts of Ravensberg, the castle has been rebuilt many times. Although often under siege, it was never stormed. After extensive restoration work, the castle now presents itself as an imposing historic site.

Visitors can explore the vast system of underground passages and climb the tower to enjoy a terrific view over the town and the surrounding countryside.

The castle is also popular for weddings and other functions.

Sparrenburg Castle also provides the backdrop for the annual Sparrenburg Festival where history and culture of the late Middle Ages comes alive during a three-day event.
