Information
The group mainly produces specially tuned versions of Ford production vehicles such as the Lightning, which is based on the F-150 pickup, and the Mustang Cobra, which was based on the Mustang. However, they do occasionally develop models independently of the rest of the company, namely the GT supercar. As of December 2005, the GT is the division's only offering available for purchase. The Mustang Cobra is being replaced by the Shelby Cobra GT500, which will not launch until April 2006 and the Lightning model is on temporary hiatus. Their only other recent model, the SVT Focus, is out of production and no replacement has been announced.
The group was headed by John Coletti until his 2004 retirement, after which Hau Thai-Tang, leader of the Mustang team, took over. SVT will be disbanded as of April 1, 2006, with the Shelby Cobra GT500 the last product of the team. Purportedly, however the SVT market concept is alive and well, and the group will be folded into a single entity with FRPP (Ford Racing Performance Parts). A new performance truck is expected to be announced in the near future.
