Spegelj Tapes

Encyclopedia : S : SP : SPE : Spegelj Tapes

Spegelj Tapes were tapes of conversations of Martin Špegelj and Josip Boljkovac, which were captured by the KOS secret service, and aired in January 1991 to the larger Yugoslav public. Some have dismissed their authenticity, which, however, was later confirmed, and Stipe Mesić was one of the first on Croatian side that admitted that tapes are probably authentic. Later, the course of events was consistent with the authenticity of the tapes.

In the conversations, Spegelj and Bojkovac discuss the civil war, which has not yet started, and the arming of Croatians in preparation for the secession. They advocate brutal ways in which to deal with families of the army employers. The tapes were a shock in the still peacefull Yugoslavia, months away from the civil war.
