Sphere Break is a minigame within the role-playing game Final Fantasy X-2. A bit like Sudoku, the game has a numerical grid that has to be dealt with using a set of rules. The mechanics of the minigame are purely mathematical, relying on sums and multiplications; the aim is to create the most multiples of a "core number" by combining numbers of the sixteen coins on the board.

Game structure

The game is played on a 4-by-4 grid of blank spaces, which are randomly populated with coins at the beginning of each turn. All coins are numbered from 1 to 9 and possess several different attributes that can help the player in Final Fantasy X-2 or in the Sphere Break minigame itself (such as free magic items, free potions, Echo, "+" coins, and quota multipliers.)

Core Sphere

The center of the board houses the green Core Sphere, where the dealer displays a new random number from 1 to 9 per turn. The player must use his or her coins to make a multiple of the number rolled by the Core Sphere.

Center Coins

The gold Center Coins are usually set to 1, 2, 3 and 5. At least one of these four center coins has to be used per turn.

Border Coins

At each turn, a random number of blue Border Coins (up to twelve) surround the center coins and the core sphere. The player must select one or more of these Border coins until the sum value of the selected coins makes a multiple of the number on the green Core Sphere.

Multiplier Echo

One of the center coins will have the Multiplier Echo attribute and will help augment the player's quota in his next turn.

Core Break

A Core Break occurs when a multiple of the Core Sphere is achieved by adding the sum of Border and Center Coins.

By using the multipliers and other coin attributes players can beat dealers with very difficult Core Spheres. The current champion Shinra has a quota of 100 coins that has to be obtained in just 20 turns with a time limit per turn of 45 seconds.

Basic gameplay

  1. A quota is agreed upon, i.e. a set number of Border Coins that needs to be collected by the end of the game. The number of turns and the time limit per turn is also decided here.
  2. Empty spaces on the board are randomly populated with coins, and the Core Sphere produces a random number from 1 to 9. The player now has a current sum of zero.
  3. The player must first select one Center Coin; its numerical value is added to the sum. If the current sum is a multiple of the Core Sphere, a "Core Break occurs" (go to step 5.) If not, the player may then continue to the next step.
  4. The player may then select one or more Border or Center Coins until the sum of the selected coin values makes a multiple of the number on the Core Sphere.
  5. Once a multiple has been reached, this is a "Core Break" -- the turn ends and the player adds any Border Coins used in the Break to his quota.
  6. At the end of each turn, any coin not used in a Core Break is increased in value by one. If it had a value of 9 before, it is removed from play. Coins used in a Core Break are also removed.
  7. Repeat from step 2 until all turns are finished, or the quota is fulfilled. If all turns are over and the player did not complete his quota he loses the game and his bet.
