Splade
Encyclopedia : S : SP : SPL : Splade
A splade is a variation of the spork. In addition to the overall spoon shape and the fork tines, it has a somewhat sharp edge or blade on one or both sides, so it has the use of a spoon, fork, and knife in one utensil. Splade is a portmanteau of the words 'spoon' or 'spork' and 'blade'.
It is unclear whether the spelling "splade" predates the brandname "Splayd". The splade was reportedly invented by Australian William McArthur in 1943 and sold slowly until around the 1960s, when the increase in buffet dining saw a rapid increase in demand.
