Sports science is the study and application of scientific principles and techniques with the aim of improving sporting performance.
The study of sports science traditionally incorporates areas of physiology, psychology, motor control and biomechanics but also includes other topics such as nutrition and diet, sports technology and performance analysis.
Higher-education degrees in sports science are becoming increasingly popular, with some universities, such as University of Birmingham, Exeter University, Leeds University, Loughborough University and the University of Bath in England, becoming renowned for the high quality of their sports science tuition.
