As the name implies, the national recreation area protects two prominent West Virginia landmarks: Spruce Knob, the highest point in West Virginia with a summit elevation of 4,863 feet (1482 meters), and Seneca Rocks, a series of 900 foot high sandstone cliffs that are popular with rock climbers.

Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks NRA was established by an act of the U.S. Congress on September 28, 1965 making it the first National Recreation Area in a United States National Forest.
