The St. John's Fog Devils are an ice hockey team in the Eastern Division of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. They are based in the Newfoundland capital of St. John's. The Fog Devils play out of Mile One Stadium. The QMJHL expanded to St. John's to fill the void created by the departure of the AHL St. John's Maple Leafs after the 2004-05 season.

Front Office

The St. John's Fog Devils are owned by local businessmen Craig & Derm Dobbin. The day-to-day operations are handled by team Governor Brad Dobbin along with a staff of employees including Director of Hockey Operations, Chris Schwartz, who was an employee of the now relocated St. John's Maple Leafs for 10 years. Real Paiement handles the General Manager and Head Coaching duties while Darryl Williams & Ed O'Brien join him on the bench as Assistant Coaches.

History

The Fog Devils participated in their first draft at the Expansion Draft in Chicoutimi on June 1, 2005. Local player Scott Brophy was selected from the Gatineau Olympiques first overall. Other Players selected were Wesley Welcher, Marty Doyle, Ilia Ejov, Kyle Stanley, Brett Beauchamp, Luke Gallant, Brandon Verge, Jonathan Cameron, Pier-Alexandre Poulin, Anthony Pototschnik, Zack Firlotte, Phillipe Côté, Olivier Guilbault, Dominic Tweed, Brandon Tidball, Sébastien Bernier, Wahsontiio Stacey, Maxime Langelier-Parent, Rodi Short, Etienne Grandmont, Nicolas Bachand, Maxime Robert, and Pier-Antoine Guillemette.

Inaugural Season

The Fog Devils announced their first ever captain to be Newfoundlander Scott Brophy.

The Fog Devils opened their first ever season on October 16, 2005 with a 3-2 win against the Saint John Sea Dogs in Saint John, New Brunswick at Harbour Station. They had their first ever Home Opener on September 23, 2005 at Mile One Stadium in St. John's, Newfoundland in front of a sold-out crowd of 6247. The Fog Devils won the game, against the Lewiston MAINEiacs, 3-2 in a shootout. Anthony Pototschnik scored the shootout winner.

St. John's recorded its first ever back-to-back wins in franchise history with wins against the Gatineau Olympiques on November 4 and 5, 2005. On November 5, 2005 the line of Scott Brophy, Oscar Sundh, and Nicolas Bachand combined for 12 points with 4 points each.

On December 17, 2005, in a game against the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, Scott Brophy scored the first ever hat trick for the Fog Devils. His third goal came with 10.1 seconds left in the overtime period.

St. John's made the playoffs in their first season, earning the sixth seed in the playoffs and finishing with a 30-34-5-1 record and 66 points. They were the second-most successful QMJHL expansion team in league history after the 1982-83 Longueuil Chevaliers. In the playoffs the Fog Devils lost in the first round in five games to Cape Breton.

The St. John's Fog Devils entered its second QMJHL Entry Draft on June 10, 2006 and selected St. John's native Luke Adam with its 1st Round pick (7th Overall). In total the team selected six Newfoundlanders and a total of fourteen players.

On June 28, 2006 the St. John's Fog Devils selected Mario Kempe (31st Overall) and Joonas Salmi (66th Overall) in the 2006 CHL Import Draft.
