Starkey is a town in Yates County, New York, USA. The population was 3,465 at the 2000 census.
The Town of Starkey is in the southeast part of the county. Starkey is in the Finger Lake Region of New York.
History
The town became part of the county in 1824 and was formed from the Town of Reading (now in Schuyler County, New York).Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 101.7 km² (39.3 mi²). 85.1 km² (32.8 mi²) of it is land and 16.7 km² (6.4 mi²) of it (16.40%) is water.The south town line is the border of Schuyler County, New York, and the east town line, formed by Seneca Lake is the border of Seneca County, New York.
New York State Route 14 and New York State Route 14A are major north-south highways.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 3,465 people, 1,243 households, and 856 families residing in the town. The population density was 40.7/km² (105.5/mi²). There were 1,624 housing units at an average density of 19.1/km² (49.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.03% White, 1.15% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.40% from other races, and 0.87% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.36% of the population.There were 1,243 households out of which 34.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.9% were married couples living together, 11.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.1% were non-families. 24.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the town the population was spread out with 30.2% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.4 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $29,337, and the median income for a family was $34,453. Males had a median income of $28,750 versus $20,583 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,861. About 13.6% of families and 19.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 29.9% of those under age 18 and 9.0% of those age 65 or over.
