List of forward states
The main difference between a backward state from a forward state in India is the rate of growth. An average of 3.0% for backwards states as compared to 6.3% in forward states during the period 1990-91 to 1997-98. The backward states of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh have been derisively nicknamed the BIMARU states. (BIMAR meaning sickly in Hindi) This has further worsened the negative impression generated by these states.List of backward states
