Stellar association
Encyclopedia : S : ST : STE : Stellar association
A stellar association is a very loose star cluster, looser than both open clusters and globular clusters. Discovered by Viktor Ambartsumian in 1947.
The Ursa Major Moving Group is one example of a stellar association; except for Dubhe and Alkaid, all the stars in the Plough, or the Big Dipper, are part of that group.
Other young moving groups include:
- the Local Association (Pleiades moving group)
- the Hyades supercluster
- the IC 2391 supercluster
- the Castor Moving Group
- the Zeta Herculis moving group
- the Alpha Persei stellar association
