Stephen Egerton

Encyclopedia : S : ST : STE : Stephen Egerton

Stephen Egerton is the lead guitarist for The Descendents and ALL. He replaced Ray Cooper in the Descendents in 1986, along with bassist Karl Alvarez. He is formerly of the Salt Lake City band The Bad Yodellers. Egerton's dexterity, precision and inventiveness as a guitarist are unsurpassed in pop-punk. His signature sound on debut for the Descendants in their 1987 album "All" propelled the group towards its definitive work. His appearance, along with bassist Karl Alvarez, marked a turning point for the Descendants; for the first time, drummer Bill Stevenson found himself alongside players with the same manic, obsessively-correct technical virtuosity as he. These are rare qualities in punk rock bands; the group subsequently evolved into All. Since 1993's Breaking Things, Egerton has consciously adopted lashings of retro-rock riffage and slurred soloing to balance the near-scientific quality of his playing.
