Steven Weed made the news in the 1970s as the live-in fiance of Patty Hearst. The 26-year-old Weed was living with the 19-year-old Hearst in Berkeley, California on February 4, 1974 when members of the SLA invaded the apartment, assaulted Weed, and kidnapped Hearst.

He first met Patty at Crystal Springs School for Girls, where he was a math teacher. Prior to teaching high school in California, Weed had been the captain of the track team at Princeton University and a pole vaulter.
